The grocery store distributed water to displaced students along Ebenezer Road.
After two shots were fire inside Perry Hall High School's cafeteria, seriously injuring one student, hundreds of evacuated students were left along Ebenezer Road with no where else to go. It was Aug. 27, and the day grew hotter into the afternoon. As students gathered into Perry Hall Square Shopping Center and the new Giant, which had just opened days earlier, grocery store management began distributing dozens of free water bottles. County Councilman David Marks, on Feb. 1, recognized store management for their service, his office announced in an email. "This is a long overdue recognition," Marks said while presenting a Baltimore County Council resolution. "With little fanfare, Giant supermarket provided an important service on that …

Baltimore Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. appeared at the Perry Hall Giant Friday morning.
Baltimore Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. said he really just wants to help kids. On Friday morning in Perry Hall, Giant presented a $25,000 donation toward the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, which Ripken said will go a long way toward accomplishing his goal. "I couldn't be more proud of the work that we do in giving kids a chance just by using the simple game of baseball," Ripken told a group of Giant management, Perry Hall Elementary students and community members. "We use that simple game just to get their attention, then we can talk to them about life." Across the country, the foundation has partnered with government and community organizations to construct synthetic Youth Development Parks that are used to host baseball and softball …

For some surrounding businesses, it's a long-anticipated improvement, accompanied by the hope of more foot traffic. Are you planning to shop at the new grocery store? Do you plan on shopping more at Perry Hall Square Shopping Center? Tell us in the comments. "I still have customers coming in and asking, 'When did you open up?'" said Gregory Dopkowski, manager of Ace Hardware on Ebenezer Road, around the corner from the new Giant. "This store has been open six years." Dopkowski said neighboring …

Councilman John Olszewski Sr. says bill could help protect bay while allowing some shopping centers to decrease parking.
Parking could be harder to come by at some Baltimore County shopping centers this Christmas but not because of a sudden change in the economy. A proposal to allow some shopping centers to reduce the number of parking spaces required by the county has some activists worried it will also limit community input. Shopping centers with 100,000 square-feet or more of retail space could seek county approval for as much as a 40 percent reduction in the number of parking spaces required by county law under a bill sponsored by Councilman John Olszeweski Sr., a Dundalk Democrat. Activists are concerned the new rules could be used to allow expansion of shopping centers in a way that would not be allowed by current law. They also expressed concern that …

I picked up my little sister from the incredibly crowded parking lot that day - and it was HOT. The thing I noticed most was that the Rite Aid staff was encouraging students to use the restroom; the Dollar Tree's doors were open to let some cool air flow onto the students gathered in front, and 2 Giant employees with a hand truck full of water were walking up and down to make sure everyone had …   more ›
