We’re launching our annual Deck the House Contest to find the most over-the-top holiday decorations in America—the best “decked” house in the country—the one home so spectacularly decorated that everyone in town jokes your holiday decorations could rival Rockefeller Center’s. Hanukkah: Not Christmas for Jews

While the two holidays fall in close proximity to each other and are celebrated in popular culture together, Hanukkah does not hold the religious significance for Jews that Christmas holds for Christians.

Each year, Hanukkah falls in close proximity or during Christmas according to the Hebrew calendar. Because of that, the two are celebrated side by side under the “Happy Holidays” moniker. But in terms of religious significance, Hanukkah doesn’t rank as high for Jews as Christmas ranks for Christians. “It’s hard to not make a big deal of out Hanukkah living in America, and I’m not sure it’s a bad thing,” said Rabbi Rhoda Silverman of Temple Emanuel in Reisterstown. “That’s not a problem for me as long as we don’t forget about everything else that makes us Jewish.” Jonathan Schwartz, senior aide to Baltimore County Council Chairwoman Vicki Almond and a member of Temple Emanuel, sees Hanukkah as having two roles in the lives of American Jews…

It drives me crazy when people keep repeating the line ''Hanukkah is a minor holiday.'' In Israel children have off all week for Hanukkah. Orthodox Jewish schools in Baltimore have a 4 day weekend. Hanukkah is other then Purim the only holiday that traditionally doesn't have restrictions on music, travel etc. and is the last holiday historically and the only one to have happened in Israel. Teach Kids to Be Thankful for Their Gifts

With the holidays behind us, it’s important to teach your kids to say thank you properly.

I don’t know about you, but I’m still recovering from a fun-filled holiday. I have thoroughly enjoyed the look on my kid’s faces when they saw their presents Christmas morning, all the food, and most importantly, the quality family time. But now that the presents are finished—and we’re putting our house back together—it’s important to me that my kids appreciate all the kindness and generosity that has been shown to them. When I was growing up, my mother had a rule about presents: you couldn’t use the gift until you had properly said thank you. Many times, this meant a phone call to say thank you for the present. But as I got older, my mom instilled in me the importance of a thank you note. I have been trying to instill that same gratitude …

Thank you. I am a Grandmother who is raising my two grandsons (ages 7 & 10). I had them write thank you notes to our friends who brought them gifts over the holidays. They, naturally, drug their feet, but quickly recovered when I brought out some beautiful notecards made by a friend of mine. The cards are simply beautiful nature pictures glued on a notecard. The boys chose the pictures they liked…   more ›

Pet Letter to Santa: Wyatt Dreams of a Home

Animals at the Baltimore Humane Society want families this holiday season.

This is the fourth pet letter to Santa featured on Patch this week. The Baltimore Humane Society supports lost and abandoned animals in our region. It is up to us to support their life-saving efforts, so they can continue to help some of the most vulnerable members of our community. In this season of giving and all year through, please remember the fine work of BHS. Recommend this article on Facebook or post it on Twitter to help spread the word about homeless pets. Get to know another BHS resident with Miley the cat's fourth letter to Santa. Dear Santa, My last letter of the season is for my friend Wyatt. Wyatt has seen so much heartbreak and trauma in his short time on this earth. He was found in the city, with a broken knee and bite …

Pet Letter to Santa: Travis Dreams of a Home

There are many ways to help the homeless animals at the Baltimore Humane Society.

This is the third of four pet letters to Santa that will be featured on Patch this week. Check back tomorrow for more. Recommend this article on Facebook or post it on Twitter to help spread the word about homeless pets. The Baltimore Humane Society is situated on a beautiful park-like property in Reisterstown. If you can't adopt or foster a homeless pet, you can still help by volunteering your time. The dogs love to walk the grounds and doing so helps them to cope with life in the kennels. Many of the cats welcome a comfy lap or a good back rub. Why not pay them a visit and make their day? They might just make yours too. Get to know another BHS resident with Miley the cat's third letter to Santa. Dear Santa, It's Miley here again. I …

Pet Letter to Santa: Nixon Needs a Home

Do you have room in your home and in your heart for a new animal friend?

This is the first of four pet letters to Santa that will be featured on Patch this week. Check back tomorrow for more. The holiday season is a time for generosity, and this time of year many ask me which animal welfare organization is most in need. My top recommendation is The Baltimore Humane Society, which does not receive any government or tax funding. It is known is for its philosophy, transparency, practices and programs. Consider making a donation, volunteering your time or adopting a new pet from them. I would like to showcase some of BHS's temporary residents by presenting Miley's letters to Santa. Dear Santa, I am writing to you on behalf of the animals here at the Baltimore Humane Society. My friend Nixon wrote a letter to you …

New O's Logo, Uniforms in Time for the Holidays

Patch shares the Orioles new hats and jerseys for you to peruse before the holiday shopping season begins.

The Orioles are turning back the clock in 2012. No, they may not be the powerhouse club that took the field in the late 60s through the 70s. But the Orioles are leaning on their classic look for a new hat logo and a flashback alternate jersey. The club has returned to the cartoon bird hat—with a slight twist on the happy bird that perched on the players' lids in the 70s and 80s—and the ball club has added an alternate orange uniform. The team has altered its sleeve patches, too, adding one to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the opening of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. What do you think of the Orioles new hat logo and alternate uniform? TELL US IN THE COMMENTS ...

Adopt a Pet this Holiday Season

As we gather in our homes and celebrate the joys of the season, consider expanding your family with a four-legged friend.

The community's response to last week's column, Letters to Santa from Homeless Pets, was overwhelming! Thank you so much, readers, for recommending the story on Facebook, making comments and spreading the word about Peepers, Trixie and other animals hoping to be adopted by loving families. In this season of giving, there are many opportunities to benefit the less fortunate. The Baltimore Humane Society is a non-profit , no-kill animal shelter serving Baltimore County and the surrounding area. Like many shelters, it depends on the generosity of the community it serves. If you cannot personally provide a home for an animal, please consider giving the gift of support. Monetary donations, as well as volunteer time, can greatly enrich and …
