Paul, I think the locations are permanent, but hopefully the final configuration will include at least 2 lanes to accomodate more cars before they back up onto 95. I also think there will be an additonal set of lights for the traffic exiting the toll lanes at 43. They will come up a straight ramp and exit onto 43 at the center of the bridge. If memory serves, the exits at 43 were not part of the …   more ›

New Ramps, Signals at I-95, White Marsh Boulevard

Watch for new traffic patterns in the White Marsh area this week.

Construction, along with potential delays and detours, continues on the I-95 Express Toll Lanes project. Two temporary ramps have been installed northbound Interstate 95 to westbound MD 43 (Exit 67B, White Marsh Boulevard), and southbound I-95 to eastbound MD 43 (Exit 67A, White Marsh Boulevard), according to a Maryland Transportation Authority release. They are expected to open at about 9 a.m. on June 27.  "Motorists should be aware that both ramp movements will change to traffic signal intersections; one new traffic signal and two right turn lanes will be at the ends of both ramps. The existing merge ramps will be closed. Portable electronic messaging signs along the exit ramps and White Marsh Boulevard will alert motorists of the new …

White Marsh Volunteer Fire Company has already been dispatched to at least several motor vehicle collisions where the new signals have been installed. I have noticed that vehicles seem to be either not stopping fully at the end of the ramp and are treating it somewhat like a merge onto Rt 43 or they are stopping but making a right into the path of a fast moving vehicle that slams on its brakes …   more ›

I knew the writing was on the wall for the ICC when I starting hearing the radio commercials about how great it is. I have never before heard of a massive advertising campaign to get people to use a new road before. One thing that I cannot understand: where does the express lane end up? Will the cars using it still need to slow down or stop to pay the tunnel tolls? Will one of the tubes be …   more ›

OPINION: White Marsh Express Toll Lanes Offer Commuters a Choice

The managed lanes approach coming to Interstate 95 in Baltimore County will help to manage congestion while using public dollars in a sensible manner.

Construction began last week to reconfigure the White Marsh Boulevard interchange along Interstate 95. This nearly $150 million project is part of the larger I-95 Express Toll Lanes (ETLs) initiative that is bringing new capacity to this heavily traveled highway—but in a manner that will make use of new technologies for managing travel demand. Since spring 2006, work has been underway on the I-95 Express Toll Lanes. Two new ETLs are being added in each direction. Drivers will be able to choose between traveling in one of four general purpose lanes—as they do today—or paying a toll to utilize the adjacent ETLs. Here is where managed lanes technology comes into play. Unlike other toll facilities nearby, rates will vary based on demand by …

I don't think these lanes are going to be so much faster during heavy traffic times yet people are suposed to pay for them. Steven J has a good point about the 6 lanes merging into 4 lanes, thats going to be a nightmare. What if someone has to get to a loved one who was taken to the hospital as fast as possible, they will have to pay to try to get around rush hour traffic? Crazy idea and a mess …   more ›

White Marsh Boulevard Construction for I-95 Express Toll Lanes

At $142.6 million, the project is expected to create 400 new jobs.

Expect construction at Interstate 95 and White Marsh Boulevard, also known as Maryland Route 43, to last at least another two years. The I-95 Express Toll Lanes project at MD 43 is underway, the Maryland Transportation Authority announced this week.  This portion of the project involves widening I-95, replacing the MD 43 bridges over I-95 and attaching planned toll lanes to MD 43. When complete, drivers may travel on existing lanes of I-95 at no additional cost, or may use express lanes by paying a toll, according to an MDTA release. The White Marsh portion of the project comes at a $142.6 million cost and is expected to create 400 new jobs, officials stated. The total project, which stretches from north of White Marsh along I-95 to south …

Yes, no tax dollars were used on this project but the MdTA is penalizing anyone who works in Perry Hall and has to travel through the tunnel to work with tripled toll rates. So pockets are still being picked just in a different fashion.   more ›
