POLL: Should Perry Hall High Install Metal Detectors?

Several parents suggested the installation of metal detectors in response to the student shooting.

During a community meeting Tuesday night, several parents of Perry Hall High students had a single request: metal detectors at the school's entrances.  Had the security devices already been installed, some parents said, 15-year-old Robert Gladden Jr. may not have been able to bring in the double-barrel shotgun used to shoot 17-year-old Daniel Borowy on Aug. 27. Principal George Roberts responded calmly to the repeated requests, but never endorsed installation. "It's not something we're going to off-handedly dismiss ... it is something we are going to look into," Roberts said, adding that officials will review data on metal detectors' cost and effectiveness. National School Safety and Security Services, a school security consulting firm, …

Oh, but wait! The Sandy Hook shooting happened nearly a month ago! How about reconsidering the idea of installing metal detectors now? It's evident that our schools are not safe. Install the metal detectors, I'm all for it.   more ›

Perry Hall High Recovering, Regaining Normalcy, Students Say

Some said the mood at the school is improving, days after a student shooting.

Minutes before the end of the school day on Wednesday, Perry Hall High School's hallways were quiet. But they soon filled with chatter and the sounds of teenagers shuffling to their buses and cars, carrying new backpacks and wearing new shoes. Despite a student shooting just two days prior, that left 17-year-old Daniel Borowy critically injured and led to the arrest of 15-year-old Robert W. Gladden Jr.—the scene appeared much like any other from the first week of a new school year. Still, signs in support of Borowy, an increased police presence and a TV news station's truck along Ebenezer Road were among the reminders of Monday's incident. Principal George Roberts emphasized on Tuesday during a news conference the need for the return of a…

Lawyer: Perry Hall Shooting Suspect Bullied, Intended No Harm

Robert W. Gladden Jr.'s attorney is challenging investigators' account of the Monday shooting.

The attorney representing Robert W. Gladden Jr.—the 15-year-old accused of shooting another student in Perry Hall High School Monday morning—is challenging investigators' narrative of the attack. George Psoras Jr., whose legal practice is based in Lutherville, claims that Gladden, a sophomore, was bullied and never intended to harm anyone when he brought a gun into the school's cafeteria, The Associated Press reports. Psoras said he believes Gladden shot into the floor, and then shot the gun again accidentally when teachers tried to wrestle it away, according to the report. "The stereotype right now is that we have a Columbine," Psoras told The Associated Press. "It's simply not the case. This is a typical teenager who was just starting …

Principal: 'Sense of Normalcy' to Return to Perry Hall High

Principal George Roberts held a press conference Tuesday morning.

Perry Hall High School was returning to a "sense of normalcy" Tuesday morning, less than 24 hours after a student-involved shooting left one 17-year-old student critically injured, Principal George Roberts told reporters. Standing in a wooded area between the school and Ebenezer Road, Roberts said staff members were careful to ensure the school day was "very structured." To facilitate the "healing process," Roberts said trauma counselors were available for students and staff and that a community meeting would likely be held in the coming week. Most students, he said, were back in class and for the most part, instructors were teaching lessons. Roberts said information on attendance was not yet available. Plans to hold regular classes on …

Police: Bullying Not A Factor In Perry Hall High Shooting

Police revealed new details in the Monday morning shooting at Perry Hall High School.

UPDATE (1:20 p.m., Aug. 28)—Investigators do not believe bullying was a factor in the Monday morning shooting at Perry Hall High School, according to police. Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson, speaking at a news conference in Dundalk late Tuesday morning, dispelled rumors that bullying allegedly led Robert Gladden Jr., 15, to open fire on his classmates in the school cafeteria. "We are aware of many reports that the suspect was a victim of bullying. We cannot confirm those reports. Gladden's conversations with investigators have not indicated bullying was an issue in this case. The investigation is ongoing," Johnson said. Johnson told reporters that Gladden was cooperating with investigators. Officials used the conference to reveal…

Alleged Perry Hall Shooter Identified, Charged With Attempted Murder

Robert Gladden Jr. was charged Tuesday with attempted murder and assault.

UPDATED (11:11 a.m.)—The 15-year-old accused in Monday's shooting at Perry Hall High School has been charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder. Robert Wayne Gladden Jr., 15, of the 8500 block of Bradshaw Road in Kingsville, was also charged with first-degree assault, according to online court records. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 7. Gladden is being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center. Police said yesterday that a student entered Perry Hall's cafeteria shortly before 11 a.m. Monday—the first day of school—with a shotgun and fired one shot that struck 17-year-old Daniel Borowy, a student at the school. Gladden fired a second shot into the ceiling of the cafeteria as school …
