More than $140,000 was raised Sunday in Middle River for The St. Baldrick's Foundation, which helps fund pediatric cancer research.
Like most high school seniors, Maria Frangos is looking forward to her prom in a few months. The 17-year-old Patapsco High student will be in attendance with her date and she'll wear a prom dress. But, there will be no hair-stylist appointment for Frangos. She will be attending the prom bald. Frangos shaved off all her hair Sunday as a show of solidarity for her younger sister, Sandra. Sandra, 13, lost all her hair last year while undergoing treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma. Sandra is in remission and her hair has grown back now, but Maria wanted to show her sister she was not alone in her battle. Maria also wanted to help other children battling cancer, as she was one of more than 225 people to shave their heads Sunday to help raise money …

Like many teenagers, Rochelle Battle was attached to her cell phone. Battle’s phone was a lifeline to her world to the point that she made 1,900 calls in December 2008. The 16-year-old also made 129 calls from her phone through the first six days of March 2009. Then, without any warning, the calls stopped on March 6, 2009. No more texts, voicemails or photos. Battle, who lived in the Pimlico community of Baltimore, just disappeared. Baltimore County prosecutors said Battle was murdered and her cell phone would go a long way toward proving who killed her. That killer turned out to be 36-year-old Jason Gross. The Middle River man was convicted in October of murdering the teen. He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 6. Prosecutors obtained a …

The Chesapeake Gateway Chamber of Commerce recognized 23 individuals that represented area firefighters, police officers, servicemen and medical personnel.
Baltimore County Fire Department Lt. Scott Ebbert knew that he had the training necessary to help rescue his fellow firefighters, if they ever became trapped during a blaze. He just hoped he never had to utilize that training. But that day came on Jan. 19 when he was one of the many firefighters who tried to rescue Lutherville volunteer firefighter Mark Falkenhan when he became trapped inside a burning apartment building.
