Jerry, Pat Soukup on Volunteerism in Perry Hall

The couple of more than 60 years were recently honored as the 2011 Perry Hall Citizens of the Year.

Pat Soukup jokes that, as a homemaker in the 1950s, she started volunteering with the Perry Hall Recreation Council to save her marriage. "If I wanted to see my husband, I had to go up to the [recreation] field," Pat, now 81, said with a laugh. "I started when my kids were 4 and 5 years old." For the vast majority of Pat and Jerry Soukup's 60-year marriage, the couple has devoted much of their time to volunteer work. Jerry, 83, and his wife, Pat, 81, were honored by the Perry Hall Improvement Association on Feb. 9 with the Perry Hall Citizens of the Year Award. Both have served as community volunteers since the mid-1950s. Read about the couple's history of service in the article, Jerry, Pat Soukup on Volunteerism in Perry Hall. Following PHIA president Dennis M. Robinson, Jr.'s presentation of the award, Jerry Soukup delivered a brief speech, thanking the PHIA and others for their support and service. He was interrupted several times by laughter and applause from the audience. Yet in a more solemn portion of his speech, he lamented that many of …

As a boy growing up within walking distance to football, baseball, and basketball and then as a parent of 3 kids playing sports in Perry Hall I really appreciate all the time and energy both of you put forth for myself, my 7 siblings and my own kids. I also really liked it when soccer was introduced as well. Thanks!   more ›
