OPINION: Telling the Tale of Perry Hall's Past and Present

The recently published illustrated history of Perry Hall Mansion helps to preserve and promote important recollections from our community's past.

For much of my life, I have had a close association with libraries and with books. Ever since I worked at the McKeldin Library periodicals desk—during my time as an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland, College Park—I have had an evolving relationship with libraries. Most recently, I have been actively engaged as a volunteer in a variety of ways for the Baltimore County Public Library (BCPL). Never in all of my time strolling through the stacks of our local Perry Hall branch did I think that, one day, I would see my name on the spine of a book housed on those very shelves. As it happens, I recently had the unique experience to co-author a local history book with a good friend of mine. This volume, which hit the streets as of…

Historic Perry Hall Mansion Addresses Neighborhood Concerns

The organization informed the Perry Hall Manor neighborhood about planned mansion renovations.

While the Perry Hall Mansion, built in the 1770s, currently hosts just a handful of small public events per year, neighbors shared concerns that larger events and future renovations could disrupt the quiet Perry Hall Manor community.  The Historic Perry Hall Mansion board of directors addressed these concerns during a general membership meeting Wednesday evening at St. Michael Lutheran Church in Perry Hall.  Led by board administrative director Jeffrey Smith, the meeting included the following highlights: Find additional information from the meeting in the live blog below.  Meeting updates were recorded live.  7:04 p.m.  Board administrative director Jeffrey Smith opened the meeting.  Some board members, including Sean Kief, author of the …

OPINION: Perry Hall Christmas Traditions Past and Present

Take a stroll through time and explore some of the Perry Hall community's Christmas traditions.

Through the years, there have been a variety of holiday traditions that residents of Perry Hall have been able to participate in during these festive days of Christmas. As readers of Perry Hall Patch settle down to celebrate the season with family members, friends, and neighbors, let's take a look at some of the ways in which our community has commemorated this holiday. One of the more unique traditions that existed in Perry Hall was associated with the Plummer family, residents of Perry Hall Mansion from 1924 until 1948. Through those years, William and Eva Plummer lived at the mansion with their three children—daughters Sybilla and Mary—and their son Adam. The Plummer family actively pursued farming on the 204 acres of land that …

Belsnickel is a man wearing fur which covers his entire body, and he sometimes wears a mask with a long tongue. He is related to other companions of Saint Nicholas in the folklore of German-speaking Europe. Unlike these figures, Belsnickel does not accompany Saint Nicholas but instead visits alone and combines both the threatening and the benign aspects which in other traditions are divided …   more ›

OPINION: Defining Poor Little Rich Girl's Historical Significance

Clearly defined criteria are used by public agencies to assess and determine the possibility that an old structure might also have broader historical significance. The same can apply in Perry Hall.

Given the recent public dialog regarding the future of the structure that used to house the Poor Little Rich Girl bridal shop in Perry Hall, I thought it might be helpful for readers to learn a little about how historical significance is actually defined. While its demolition has been postponed, at least temporarily, even activists are skeptical that the former shop can be saved. It's the question of should it be saved that drags on.  As it happens, there is a very specific process—used by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service—to assess the relative significance of older structures. A clear understanding of this methodology might make it easier for folks to understand the context of recent events associated with the …

Ronald Vos, I would very much welcome the opportunity to speak with you about your research of Perry Hall History, as I am an amateur local historian. Does anyone realize that George Washington DID spend many nights at The Red Lion Inn in WHITE MARSH? Does anyone know where it is? It was demolished years ago. My concern is that as time goes by and people forget, or newcomers never know, more …   more ›
