Belair Road Closed this Weekend During Sinkhole Damage Repairs

State Highway Administration workers will repair the 30-inch drainage pipe that caused the sinkhole on Sept. 30.

You may remember the 5-foot sinkhole that opened on Belair Road between Olde Forge Lane and Necker Avenue in Perry Hall on Sept. 30. Workers were forced to close the short stretch of road after Tropical Storm Nicole's steady rains broke an underground drainage pipe and washed away large chunks of pavement. This weekend, State Highway Administration workers will temporarily close Belair Road between Olde Forge Lane and Necker Avenue and Ridgely Road, while further repairing the drainage pipe—first from 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, and again from 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7 to early Monday morning, said Charlie Gischlar, a SHA spokesman. Belair Road Reopens After Workers Repair Five Foot Sinkhole

The sinkhole was repaired by 5 a.m. Friday.

UPDATE (10 a.m.)—Traffic reopened on Belair Road at 5 a.m. Friday after workers performed overnight repairs to a 5 foot deep sinkhole between Olde Forge Lane and Necker Avenue in Perry Hall. At 3 a.m., crews arrived and began filling the hole with back-fill, a rock mixture. Within less than two hours, it was covered with steel plates. "It could have been a lot worse," said Charlie Gischlar, State Highway Administration spokesman. "With 6-plus inches of rain, you never know what Mother Nature will do to roads." These repairs are only temporary, said Gischlar, until a more permanent fix, including two new layers of asphalt, can be performed on Sunday.
