Long-Awaited Perry Hall Walgreens to Open Friday

After more than two years of construction, Perry Hall's second Walgreens is set to open.

Perry Hall's second Walgreens will open to the public on Friday, and a grand opening celebration is scheduled for October, a store worker confirmed. As of Wednesday afternoon, a sign on the front door read, "WALGREENS will be opening Friday, September 14th Thank You & Be Well!" Prep work on the store at 8650 Belair Road and Silver Spring Road began more than two years ago. In 2010, Wayne Lauman, past owner of Direct Home Furnishings, formerly Lauman's Furniture, sold the property to the Walgreens corporation. A lengthy demolition process followed. The Walgreens' opening was originally anticipated for the winter of 2011-2012. Repeated delays, however, pushed it back to the fall. Store representatives have declined to comment on the cause of…

Tim - you want trees? This area would have been good for fracking. I think you stated that you are not from the area, like me. You are wasting your time explaining rational thoughts and ideas to certain individuals.   more ›

UPDATE: Perry Hall Walgreens Opening Delayed, Eyeing October

Company officials have declined to comment on the cause of delays.

The opening of Perry Hall's second Walgreens store is delayed—again. But company representatives are mum on what's keeping the fully constructed store from opening its doors to customers. As of Wednesday afternoon, a worker in the national chain's customer service department told Patch that the store at 8650 Belair Road, at the Silver Spring Road intersection, was expected to open within the first two weeks of October. The worker said she had no information on why the store's opening has been delayed. Multiple recent calls to company spokespeople have not been returned. In May 2012, the store's opening was projected for the end of summer. In February 2012, a company spokesperson projected the opening at early May. In June 2011 and April …

On a more serious note, this redundancy does not go unnoticed. We have other family from out of state who comes through every few months. To them the redundancy of the stores, the vacant buildings, and the "permanent" unattractive portables reflect negatively on the planning, government, and resident involvement in the community. I tell them not to be fooled by what they see - PH residents and …   more ›

UPDATE: Second Perry Hall Walgreens to Open 'End of Summer'

The store's projected opening faces ongoing delays.

Don't be fooled—Perry Hall's second Walgreens may appear finished, but it isn't expected to open for a few more months. The store at 8650 Belair Road, at the Silver Spring Road intersection, is expected to open "towards the end of summer," said Walgreens spokesperson Robert Elfinger. Elfinger said he did not have any further information on why the opening seems to be delayed. Company representatives originally told Patch the store would open in winter of 2012, but later adjusted the projected opening to early May. At about 14,550 square feet, the new store will include a pharmacy, a grocery section and "aisles of everyday essential items," Elfinger told Patch in April 2011. Between 25 and 30 employees are expected to be hired, Walgreens …

I agree w/everyone else & feel we don't need another Walgreens in the neighborhood. It would have been nice to put a high-end grocery store like Eddie's & Graul's or better yet Wegmanns.   more ›

Second Perry Hall Walgreens to Open Early May

Between 25 and 30 employees are expected to be hired before the store's opening.

The Walgreens at the corner of Silver Spring Road and Belair Road is expected to open in early May, according to a company official. The store's opening will be the result of more than a year of construction, starting with the deconstruction of the Direct Home Furnishings store, formerly Lauman's Furniture. The property was sold to Walgreens in 2010. The store was originally slated to open in winter 2012. In an email to Patch, Walgreens spokesperson Vivika Panagiotakakos stated that "weather, permits and construction" all impact a store's opening date. Between 25 and 30 employees are expected to be hired, according to Panagiotakakos. At about 14,550 square feet, the new store will include a pharmacy, a grocery section and "aisles of …

Already gone, Kelly. In it's place? An 'awesome' dollar store, you know, something to cater to the transients that don't actually live here. The Cake Cottage found a new home in that Overlea Shopping center (or whatever its called) just past the I-695 interchange - it's the strip mall with Beltway 6 movies and Carrabba's.   more ›

PHOTO OF THE DAY: Walgreens at Silver Spring

Take a closer look at life in Perry Hall.

The most-asked question I've received since becoming a Patch editor has been, "What's being built at the corner of Belair and Silver Spring?" Until recently, community members had to look on Patch for the answer. Three articles detail the property's transition from the former Lauman's to a future Walgreens: Yesterday, however, I noticed a bright red sign on the construction site announcing that Walgreens is "coming soon." Want to share your shot of life in Perry Hall? Add it to the media gallery or email it to me, along with a description, at emilyk@patch.com. Include "Photo of the Day" in the subject line.

I don't think there is such a thing as locally owned business anymore. And sorry to say if the mom and pop stores are pricier or at a bad location I am not going. Hate to say that but my time and money is more precious in this day and age.   more ›

Construction Continues on Second Perry Hall Walgreens

The store is expected to open this winter.

This article is a follow-up to Second Perry Hall Walgreens to Open Winter 2012 and Perry Hall: A Great Place to Get Your Prescriptions Filled, both published on April 27. Workers recently laid the foundation for Perry Hall's second Walgreens, located at the corner of Silver Spring and Belair roads. Construction remains on schedule, said Tiffani Washington, a Walgreens spokesperson. The new store is expected to open this winter. It's "certainly not uncommon" for the store to be located just two miles from an existing store, Washington said. Nearly two-thirds of Americans live within three miles of a Walgreens. "Lots of research goes into site selection. Something in the research indicated a need for this in the community," she said. "This …

Perry Hall: A Great Place to Get Your Prescriptions Filled

Perry Hall has at least 10 pharmacies.

In response to the Patch article, Second Perry Hall Walgreens to Open Winter 2012, Becky Smedberg Schafer commented on Facebook:  Great! Now we can put up a sign "Welcome to Perry Hall, a great place to get your prescriptions filled!" So, exactly how many pharmacies are there in Perry Hall? I counted 10.  Did I miss any? I know there are even more right outside of Perry Hall, at Walmart and Food Lion.

I don't know if you count the White Marsh mall area as Perry Hall, but you've got the Giant, another Patient First, the Hopkins pharmacy, Target Pharmacy. Does BJ's still fill prescriptions?   more ›
