ReplyLots of kids don't show up until after Labor Day anyway. They spend summers with parents who get custody all summer and live out of state or the county. Its great for those kids when they start school and are already a week behind.

Maybe but can you dispute the facts - there simply is no infrastructure that could be constructed in existing neighborhoods to solve the problem so where does the money go? To pay individuals and so called "green" organizations. Do you really think that homeowners are going to pay thousands to tear up their driveway and replace it with ultra expensive semi permeable pavers that are marginally effective? Just another example of smokescreen legislation to fool the ignorant public.

ReplyAndy you nailed it. Here is a blip from The Blaze:
"And how does the state plan to spend these new tax dollars? It’s unclear:
The state law is kind of squishy. It can be spent to build and maintain stream and wetland restoration projects. And, of course, a lot of it will go to “monitoring, inspection, enforcement, review of stormwater management plans and permit applications and mapping of impervious surfaces.” In other words, hiring more bureaucrats to administer the rain tax program.
It can also be spent on “public education and outreach” (whatever that means) and on “grants to nonprofit organizations” (i.e. to the greenies who pushed the tax through the various levels of government)."
Unless we are going to attempt to divert storm water runoff before it enters local streams, restoring them won't help. Case in point - Minebank Run in Cromwell Valley Park. Millions have been spent to restore the stream; however, storm water blowout following heavy rain events makes long term restoration impossible. Where would all of the storm water management ponds be constructed to contain the neighborhood runoff? People should take responsibility for their own property but rain barrels and rain gardens can only do so much. Fortunately new development is forced to install infrastructure to contain runoff - retrofitting existing neighborhoods is impossible. Large scale low impact design infrastructure is the only answer, but I don't hear anything about that taking place. -

We don't have a combined system here - the majority of storm drains flow directly into streams.

ReplyIt's absolutely ridiculous. Go into any school in June and see what's going on - kids helping teachers packing up rooms, kids sleeping on desks while teachers play movies all day, utter chaos as some teachers "teach to the bitter end" and others permit kids to hang out all day. The same thing happens during the days before holidays. The obsession with the number of days that kids attend school is ridiculous. Where is the supervision that ensures that if kids are required to be in school they should be engaged in meaningful work. How about common sense - no school before Labor Day or after Memorial Day and make good use of the time kids are there. Student performance wouldn't be affected at all on the sacred tests - I guarantee it!
