ReplyThanks for clearing that up. I saw that sign and was surpised that us local folks or our HOA didn't get anything in the mail regarding the closure. Looks like a minor inconvenience only.

Steve, you are correct that it was not mentioned in the debates. I would argue that it was never an issue as the right to bear arms for the purpose of self defense was assumed at that time.

Cornell, I think the bill uspets me because it targets the responsible gun owners, not the underlying causes of gun crime. I do not know what could be added to a law that would solve the problem of gun violence. Straw gun purchases are illegal, cocaine, heroin, meth, etc is illegal , possesing a firearm during the commission of a crime is illegal. It is probably a safe bet that the guns used in most violent crimes (street crime) were not purchased legally. So where do they come from? They are stolen or purchased by someone who can pass a background check and then illegally sold to a criminal. The fingerprinting and training aspect of this bill is described as an effort to curtail these straw purchases but I suspect that a violent criminal can and will find a way to circumvent this. (think more home and commercial burglaries or even international trafficking) I personally believe that the causes of gun crime are so socially complex and no additional laws passed can alleviate it. The entire bill is a cop out in my opinion because the discussion of what is the underlying cause of violent crime is one that our leaders do not want to have. If this bill works as our leaders claim it will, I will be first to say "well done" My suggestion? Be involved in your community, volunteer to be a big brother or mentor to the kids that have been born into a cycle of violence and drugs. Find worthwhile charities. I know my opinions will not sway the debate but I offer them because you asked!

Don't know the details on this incident but there are some good products that allow secure storage of guns (especially handguns) and also allow quick access by the owner. It is my opinion that there should be extra security for firearms other than just a locked residence. Burglaries arent that rare of an occurrence.
