ReplyThe balanced budget we "had" was the result of an economic boom. Now that the bust has arrived balancing the budget will be more difficult. We will need to reduce unemployment, raise consumer confidence, and bring our troops home before we can balance a budget in the near future. We're on our way... but it's going to be a long slow process. There are so many things our president could do that require no money, just a signature, or an announcement... simple acts that could create jobs but our president isn't listening to the small business voices. He just put together yet another "business" council... with nothing but fortune 500 leaders represented.

ReplyThere's an underlying problem here that must be fixed. We pass legislation for projects and then forget to follow up on how effectively the money was used, and what was the actual contribution to the economy. We need to have follow-up analysis and review points that are independently analyzed. One example is the SBA program of SBDC offices. The money funnels through the university system and the actual services provides become all to costly due to the overhead slice that the institution takes off the top. The goal of the SBDC is to assist in creating new small businesses, but that goal is not fulfilled as efficiently and effectively as it could be. We don't need smaller government, we need to update our government and actually know what we're getting for our dollars!

The SBA defines a "Small Biz" as any company with less than 500 employees! I think <20-30 is a more reasonable figure. We need to stabilize those businesses and then concentrate on creating new businesses. What we spend right now for "job training" is 7000 per head- and those jobs are often low paying. If we shift dollars to business development and growth (like other countries) we could use the same dollars -7000 per business as a loan, not a grant. The result would be business growth. Too many small business owners get caught up in doing the same thing, the same way day in and day out. There is a new world out there for marketing, and growing beyond your local market... they need the knowledge and some training and they would grow and hire. Businesses with 100 employees have solid banking and investment relationships... they don't need the help. However, if treasury doesn't change their rules on CDFI lenders, we'll see more job loss. President Obama had a 30 Billion dollar loan fund for these businesses and only 4 Billion got through the Geithner filtering system. Again, Wall Street puts obstacles in front of Main Street... and Wall Street gets cash without strings attached? It's horrible! We all need our Credit Unions and Community Banks to be strong, these are the real small business lenders and they have deep roots in the community- they know how to loan money more safely than the big banks and their revolving door of low paid staffers.

Members of the GOP actually approached me when I was in my late twenties about a run for office. At the time my business was creating more jobs per year than I ever imagined. Our sector of Main street shops and cottage industry producers was exploding... so I declined. Now, with all this experience, the best place for my knowledge and skills is on the Hill. I really think I can get alot accomplished. Many of the Made in USA or Buy American bills that are introduced never get anywhere... they are nothing but a photo opportunity and press release with no enforcement or substance. That must change.
